Prayer for exam: Saraswati prarthana for students
Short prayers for exams, for a student or for your child, with Saraswati and Ganesha mantras, how to pray before an exam, and how to have a prayer read on air.
A prayer for an exam asks for a calm mind, a clear memory and the courage to do your best. In Hindu homes students traditionally pray to Saraswati, goddess of learning, and to Ganesha, who clears the way before any new task. Here are short prayers for a student or for a child you love, two mantras to go with them, and a way to have your prayer read aloud on Mahakatha Radio.
Prayer steadies the mind; the studying still does the work. Use both.
Prayers for exams
Use the student's name where it says name, or say "me" if the prayer is for yourself.
Before you start studying
Saraswati Ma, sit with me at this desk.
Help me understand, not just remember.
When my mind wanders, bring it gently back.
Let this work be my offering to you.
On the morning of the exam
Today I have done what I could.
Give me a calm breath as I walk in,
a clear head as I read each question,
and steady hands as I write.
A parent's prayer for their child
I hold name in my heart today.
Take away their fear and give them clear thinking.
Whatever the result, let them know they are loved,
and that their worth is more than any mark.
When you are anxious
My heart is racing, and that is all right.
I breathe in slowly, and I breathe out slowly.
I know more than my fear tells me.
Ganesha, clear the path in front of me.
While waiting for results
The exam is done, and the result is not in my hands.
Give me patience while I wait,
and grace to meet whatever comes,
knowing that one result never decides a whole life.
Mantras for exams
Saraswati Namastubhyam
सरस्वति नमस्तुभ्यं वरदे कामरूपिणि। विद्यारम्भं करिष्यामि सिद्धिर्भवतु मे सदा॥ Saraswati Namastubhyam, Varade Kamarupini, Vidyarambham Karishyami, Siddhirbhavatu Me Sada
"Salutations to you, Goddess Saraswati, giver of blessings. As I begin my studies, may I always be blessed with success." Many children learn it early and chant it before opening a book. Traditionally chanted for deep focus in study or work. Listen on Mahakatha.
Vakratunda Mahakaya
वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्यकोटि समप्रभ। निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्व कार्येषु सर्वदा॥ Vakratunda Mahakaya, Suryakoti Samaprabha, Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva, Sarva Kaaryeshu Sarvada
"O Ganesha with the curved trunk and mighty form, bright as a million suns: free my path from obstacles in everything I do, always." Chanted at the start of any important task, traditionally for clearing obstacles. Listen on Mahakatha.
How to pray before an exam
- Each morning of exam season, after bathing, sit for two minutes before you study.
- Chant Saraswati Namastubhyam 11 or 21 times. Our japa counter can keep count for you.
- On the exam day, chant Vakratunda Mahakaya once before you leave home, and again quietly before you open the paper.
- Breathe. Three slow breaths, longer out than in, help settle the body.
- Sleep and eat well. A rested brain remembers more than a tired one, whatever you pray.
Some students keep Mahakatha Radio playing softly while they study: chants with no lyrics in your own language are easy to work alongside. For more, see mantras for study and mantras for exam success. Anxiety that will not settle is worth talking about with a parent, teacher or counsellor; mantras support calm but are not a replacement for help when you need it.
Have a prayer read aloud on air
For a parent or grandparent, a prayer on air is a lovely way to tell a student, "we are all with you."
- Have it read aloud on air. Offer a prayer from ₹251 or $7. It is written gently into a short prayer, read aloud during Prayer Requests at 7:00 am or 7:00 pm India time, and followed by a mantra chosen for the student. We email you when it airs. Offer a prayer
- Add it to the prayer wall for free. A line like "For Riya, calm and courage for her boards" goes on the prayer wall.
Questions people ask
What is a powerful prayer for exam success?
