Mantra for karya siddhi: for success in a task

Karya siddhi mantras for success in a task or new undertaking: the Hanuman karya siddhi verse, Vakratunda Mahakaya and more, with meaning and how to chant.

Karya siddhi means the successful completion of a task (karya). The best-known karya siddhi mantra is a verse to Hanuman from the Valmiki Ramayana, "Tvam Asmin Karya Niryoge", and the most common prayer before starting any task is Vakratunda Mahakaya to Ganesha. Chant Ganesha's mantra as you begin, and Hanuman's for the strength to see the work through.

These mantras do not guarantee a result. They are traditionally chanted to begin with a clear intention, to steady the mind when the work gets hard, and to offer the outcome with humility. Notice that the Hanuman verse itself asks for effort: "yatnam asthaya", having made the effort.

Five mantras for success in a task

Karya Siddhi Hanuman mantra

Tvam Asmin Karya Niryoge Pramanam Harisattama, Hanuman Yatnam Asthaya Duhkha Kshaya Karo Bhava

"Best of the vanaras, in this task you are the one we rely on. Hanuman, take up the effort, and bring an end to our sorrow." A verse from the Sundara Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana, traditionally chanted 108 times before or during an important undertaking. Mahakatha Radio plays Hanuman mantras day and night, alongside the full Hanuman Chalisa on Mahakatha.

Vakratunda Mahakaya

Vakratunda Mahakaya, Suryakoti Samaprabha, Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva, Sarva Karyeshu Sarvada

"O Ganesha of the curved trunk and mighty form, bright as a million suns: keep my path free of obstacles in every task, always." The words "sarva karyeshu", in all tasks, make this the natural karya siddhi prayer to Ganesha. It is chanted before starting anything new. Listen on Mahakatha.

Om Gan Ganapataye Namah

Om Gam Ganapataye Namah

"Salutations to Ganesha." Gam is Ganesha's bija (seed) syllable. Short enough to chant 108 times each morning while a project is under way, for calm and focus on your goals. Listen on Mahakatha.

Om Hum Hanumate Namah

Om Hum Hanumate Namah

"Om, with the seed sound Hum, I bow to Hanuman." A simple Hanuman mantra for strength and determination, good for daily japa alongside the karya siddhi verse. Listen on Mahakatha.

Sarvamangala Mangalye

Sarva Mangala Mangalye Shive Sarvartha Sadhike, Sharanye Tryambake Gauri Narayani Namostute

"You who are the goodness in all that is good, who brings every aim to fulfilment, refuge of all, three-eyed Gauri, Narayani: we bow to you." From the Devi Mahatmyam. "Sarvartha sadhike", she who accomplishes every purpose, is why many families end a puja for a new venture with this verse. Listen on Mahakatha.

How to chant for karya siddhi

  1. Name the task clearly. Before chanting, say to yourself what you are beginning: an exam, a new job, a house move, a court date, a business launch.
  2. Begin with Ganesha. Chant Vakratunda Mahakaya once or three times, as almost every Hindu undertaking begins.
  3. Chant the Hanuman verse 11, 21 or 108 times. Many people do this daily from the start of the task until it is done, or for a fixed period such as 21 or 40 days. Tuesdays and Saturdays are Hanuman's traditional days.
  4. Do the work. The verse asks for effort, and so does the tradition.
  5. Offer the result. Whatever the outcome, finish with Sarvamangala or a moment of thanks. The Gita's teaching is to give your best to the work and let go of anxiety about its fruit.

If your family has its own custom, such as a particular count or a specific day to begin, follow it.

If someone you love is facing an important day, such as surgery, an interview or a hearing, you can offer a prayer for them. It is read aloud on air at 7:00 am or 7:00 pm India time, followed by a mantra chosen for them.
