Mantra for Dhanteras: Dhanvantari, Lakshmi and Kubera
The Dhanteras 2026 mantras (Fri 6 Nov): Dhanvantari for health, Lakshmi and Kubera for prosperity. Devanagari, meaning, and how to chant them in the evening.
On Dhanteras, families traditionally chant two kinds of mantra: the Dhanvantari mantra, for health, and Lakshmi and Kubera mantras, for a prosperous home. In 2026, Dhanteras falls on Friday 6 November, two days before Diwali. The puja is usually done in the evening, after sunset, with a lamp lit at the door.
Dhanteras is the thirteenth day (Trayodashi) of the dark fortnight of Kartik, and it opens the five days of Diwali. It honours Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods and the patron of Ayurveda, who is said to have risen from the churning of the ocean holding a pot of amrit. That is why many families call the day Dhanvantari Jayanti, and why the first wish of Dhanteras is good health. In 2027, Dhanteras falls on Wednesday 27 October. Dates are for New Delhi; tithi timings shift slightly by city.

These are prayers for a steady, grateful, generous home, not a promise of money. No mantra takes the place of honest work and careful choices. See mantras for money for more on chanting with the right intention.
How to keep Dhanteras at home
If your family has its own custom, follow it. A simple evening might look like this:
- Clean and light up. Clean the home and the entrance, and draw a small rangoli at the door.
- Begin with Ganesha. Chant Om Gan Ganapataye Namah a few times before anything else.
- Honour Dhanvantari. Light a lamp, offer flowers and a little tulsi, and chant the Dhanvantari mantra 11 or 21 times, thinking of the health of everyone in the family.
- Honour Lakshmi and Kubera. Offer flowers, rice and sweets, and chant one of their mantras 108 times on a mala, or as many times as you can with attention.
- The lamp for Yama. In many homes, a lamp is lit outside facing south in the evening (Yama Deepdaan), a prayer that the family be protected from untimely loss.
- Buy something small, if you wish. Many families buy a new utensil, a little silver or gold, or a broom on Dhanteras as a sign of welcome to Lakshmi. Something modest, bought gladly, is in the spirit of the day.
Two days later comes Lakshmi Puja. See the Lakshmi mantra for Diwali guide for what to chant that night.
